"Creativity is that marvelous capacity to grasp mutually
distinct realities and draw a spark from their juxtaposition," mused
Max Ernst. Recalibrating this sentiment, artist and architect, Lawrence Randolph
re-contextualizes history, weaving powerful socio-political-cultural and historical narratives where literature, mythology, and symbolism intertwine in a painterly forum. As he straddles different time periods over various centuries, his dramatic visual dialogues invite
audiences back in time as he intricately blends classical elements with an innovative, contemporary style. Creating an alternate, hybrid pictorial universe, Lawrence
re-imagines history with a multi-layered oeuvre which reflects on history and the convergence of cultural experience and events.
An Artistic Time Traveler, Lawrence's subjects of
exploration include Zelensky, Napoleon, Rothko, Robert Oppenheimer, as well as Barbie. Furthermore, he cleverly re-envisions Van Gogh's "Starry Night" with a modern, witty interpretation entitled: "Smoggy Night." Weaving both allegorical and metaphorical components into his oeuvre, his compelling paintings contain a timeless elegance and a wry, contemporary perspective.
By offering Vermeer's"Girl with a Pearl Earring,"
emblazoned with tattoos who is using a Bluetooth, he correlates past and present themes of culture and figures of history, re-mixing history with his unique interpretative artistic vision.
Visualizing the adage, "The more things change, the more things remain the same," Mr Randolph re-configures past historical figures and societal events with the present. As he re-positions and re-mixes history, his tongue-in-cheek, conjectural visual iconography poses parodies about how the past weighs on the present. His artistic satire of juxtaposing Napoleon to Putin, along with pop culture figures echo earlier conversations, while engaging in new ones. Over the various centuries, he amalgamates layers of history, fusing identity, memory, and time, interspersing diverse narratives into his panoramas. By introducing historical personas who become international time travelers alongside Mr Randolph,
he becomes our tour guide through the centuries.
Clever, sophisticated, and cosmopolitan, Lawrence Randolph creatively challenges the notions of culture and history with humor, and optimism, offering a new artistic algorithm of life. With an exciting visual syntax he aims to reflect on the profound essence of the present moment, cultivating the sense that the past reverberates with the present. A celebrated Hamptons architect, Lawrence Randolph's art is widely treasured in the Northeast and Amsterdam Whitney Gallery is proud to shine the spotlight on his brilliant, revisionist oeuvre."
